Post-Renovation Handover Clean At Setia Walk Puchong

The Yap family had just finished a major renovation on their 1,400 sqft duplex. The contractor's "final clean" left cement haze on every tile, paint mist on the new shower glass, and a varnish smell trapped in the new built-in wardrobes. Two cleaners, across two days, four-stage sequence.

Alpha cleaner mid-stage-2 of a post-renovation clean — wiping cement haze from glazed tile in a Setia Walk Puchong duplex

Mr. Yap called us 8 days after his renovation contractor handed over the keys. The family had moved in immediately, expecting to live with normal new-home dust. By the third night, his wife was sneezing through dinner and their toddler had started rubbing his eyes constantly. The "final clean" they'd paid the contractor RM 600 for had not actually addressed any of the post-reno specifics we cover in our post-renovation cement haze guide.

What We Found

Walk-through revealed the standard post-reno residue pattern. The contractor had vacuumed and mopped — surface clean only. Beneath that:

  • Cement haze on every tile floor. Visible as a dull greyish film when light hit it from the side. Most obvious in the master bathroom (newly tiled).
  • Cement and grout splatter on shower glass. Random dotted pattern, not just at the bottom — indicates the glass was installed before grouting was fully cleaned up.
  • Paint mist on living-room window glass. A fine spray pattern from when the ceiling was rolled — the painters had taped the frames but not the glass face.
  • Varnish smell trapped inside built-in wardrobes. The interior shelves were freshly oiled and the doors had stayed closed for weeks, concentrating the VOC.
  • Drywall dust on top of every horizontal surface. Top of all door frames, top of cabinets, light fittings, AC indoor unit casings, ceiling cornices.
  • Sawdust trapped in skirting board top edges. The fine timber dust from the new built-ins.
  • Adhesive residue on bathroom sink and toilet bowl. Protective film glue had been peeled but the sticky residue was untouched.

What We Did

Standard 4-stage post-reno sequence. The duplex layout meant we worked one floor per day to keep dust travel under control.

Day 1 — Ground Floor

  • 09:00 – 11:00: Stage 1 — bagging of leftover packaging, HEPA-vacuum top to bottom. Special attention to ceiling fan blades, cornice ridges, top of all kitchen cabinets, AC indoor unit casings.
  • 11:00 – 13:30: Stage 2 — cement haze removal across all kitchen and powder-room tile. Phosphoric descaler, 4-minute dwell, microfibre wipe, neutralised with clean water. Two passes on the kitchen floor — first the tile, then the grout lines specifically. Paint mist scraped off the living-room window glass at 30 degrees.
  • 13:30 – 14:00: Lunch break (off-site).
  • 14:00 – 17:00: Stage 3 — surface wipe-down. Inside every kitchen cabinet shelf, drawer interior, range hood housing, hob splashback, all door fronts. Adhesive residue scraped off the powder-room sink.
  • 17:00 – 18:00: Floor wet-vac twice. Living and dining furniture cushions covered for Day 2.

Day 2 — Upper Floor + Final Pass

  • 09:00 – 12:00: Master bedroom — Stage 1 + Stage 2. Wardrobe interiors wiped after airing for 30 minutes with the doors fully open and the AC running on dry mode. Master bath cement haze removal across shower glass, floor tile, and grout lines.
  • 12:00 – 13:30: Second bedroom + family bath — same sequence. Toddler's bedroom wardrobe deliberately aired longer (additional 20 minutes) to clear varnish smell before any soft furnishings went in.
  • 13:30 – 14:00: Lunch break.
  • 14:00 – 16:00: Stage 3 — surface wipe-down across upper floor. Top of door frames, all light switches, power sockets.
  • 16:00 – 17:00: Stage 4 — both AC indoor units louvre-washed (full chemical service was scheduled separately). Curtain rails wiped, soft furnishings re-introduced. Final supervisor walk-through with Mr. and Mrs. Yap.

Result

The Yap family slept the unit on Day 2 evening. Mrs. Yap's sneezing stopped overnight. The varnish smell from the wardrobes was gone within 24 hours of the doors staying open through the clean. Mr. Yap messaged us a week later: their toddler's eye-rubbing had not recurred.

Specific outcomes worth flagging:

  • Cement haze fully cleared from all tile floors. Master bathroom tile now reflects light cleanly — the grey film was masking the actual finish.
  • All shower glass now smudge-free. Both bathrooms.
  • Paint mist completely removed from living-room window. The 30-degree plastic scraper technique caught what detergent never would.
  • Wardrobe varnish smell resolved — air-out during the clean was as effective as the wipe-down itself.
  • Floor finish: smooth to bare foot, no residue of any kind.

For owners scheduling a post-reno clean, the timing matters as much as the scope. Our blog post on post-renovation cement haze covers the 7-to-14-day waiting rule and why scheduling earlier wastes the work.

★★★★★

We thought our contractor's final clean was good. We were wrong. The Alpha team came in and showed us all the dust we had been living with — top of cabinets, behind the cooker, the cement film on every shower glass. Two days of work and the unit feels brand new. The varnish smell is finally gone and our son stopped rubbing his eyes within a day. Hire them BEFORE you move in next time.
